What is the Kentucky Poppy Project??

World War I Commemoration

 

The Kentucky World War I Centennial Committee has started the KY Poppy Project in order to honor the World War I Veterans!!

  • They are seeking help in making replicas of poppies to honor Kentucky Veterans from WWI.
  • Kentucky has set aside April 2017 – 2019 as the 100th Year Commemoration of World War I.
  • The KY Poppy Project will continue to collect the poppies from across the state until they can fill the Capitol Steps in Frankfort to close out the WWI Commemoration in the summer of 2019.

 

Why Poppies??

Poppies have been the symbol of remembrance dating back to 1915 during World War I when Lt. Col. John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies growing in fields between graves of fallen soldiers who were his friends.

  • At that time, he wrote the famous poem “In Flanders Fields”.

 

How are Bell County Students contributing?

  • Students from every school created poppies to be sent to the Kentucky Poppy Project.
  • Bell County wants to honor our veterans and never forget their sacrifice.
