National History Day

Bell County District National History Day Event

The Bell County School District hosted their annual National History Day (NHD) event on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at the Bell County Community Center.  Bell Central School Center, Frakes School Center, Lone Jack School Center, Page School Center, Right ForkSchool Center, and Bell County High School were all represented.  Students presented either their exhibits, performances, documentaries, papers, or websites to the various judges which included consultants from KEDC, faculty from LMU, and local area professionals.  Several individuals and groups qualified to move onto the regional competition in March that will be held at the Cumberland Campus of Southeast Community College.

2019 State National History Day Winners

On Saturday, April 27th, regional National History Day winners from Bell Central, Page, Right Fork, and Bell County High School competed at the state NHD Competion in Lexington, Kentucky on the campus of the University of Kentucky.  Bell County was well represented and came away with several individual student and group winners moving onto the Nationals in Washington, D.C. later this summer.  Those moving onto Nationals include Mikayla Gambrel from Bell Central placing second in the Junior Papers Category on "Glacier Girl"; Glyn Daniels, Alyssa Lee, McKenzie Laws, Shelby Hunter from Page School Center placing second in Junior Performance Category with "Pompei"; Marli Hacker, Jackson Walters and Kaelyn Miracle from Page School Center placing second in Junior Exhibit; and finally Bub Treece, Chandler Widener, Elizabeth Black, Gracie Gray, and Alyssa Brooks representing Bell County High School placing second in the Senior Performance Category.

2019 Regional National History Day

On Friday, March 22nd, students from Bell Central, Page, and Right Fork School Centers along with two groups from Bell County High School competed in the regional National History Day (NHD) Competition at the Southeast Campus located in Cumberland, Kentucky.  Students participated in the NHD categories of Exhibit, Performance, Website, and Written Composition.  Each school had students move onto the state level competition on Saturday, April 27, 2019.

2018-2019

District National History Day Competition

On Tuesday, February 26th, 2019, the Bell County School District held its second District National History Day competition.  Students from Bell Central (Sponsor Heather Cornett), Page (Sponsor Pam Miracle), and Right Fork School Centers (Sponsor Clifton Caldwell/Jonathan Defevers) competed in multiple categories including exhibits, performances and websites. This year's theme is Triumph and Tragedy.  All entries had to demonstrate this theme through their project and their chosen historical context.  Judges for the competition included personnel from Lincoln Memorial University in addition to personnel from the district.  Multiple groups from each school were selected to move forward to the regional National History Day competition to be held on March 22, 2019 at the Cumberland Campus of KCTCS.

2018 Regional National History Day

Regional National History Day competition was held at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College campus in Cumberland, Kentucky, on Friday, March 23rd. Several students from Bell Central, Page, and Right Fork School Centers qualified to move onto the state competition to be held later in April. These included exhibits (group and individual), performances, and websites.

History Comes Alive with Bell County Students!!

 

 

 

Regional Competition:

National History Day in Kentucky is sponsored by the Kentucky Historical Society.  They provide schools with the opportunity to compete in regional and state contests each spring. There are 5 categories in which to compete.  Those are Documentary, Website, Exhibit, Paper, and Performance.  Each year there is a theme which your entry must reflect.  The 2017 theme is "Taking a Stand". 

Students from Bell Central School Center sponsored by Ms. Amanda Day and Bell County High School sponsored by Ms. Samantha Johnson participated in the regional contest located on SKCTC Cumberland Campus. Several students qualified to participat in the state competition that will take place later in April.

Junior DOCUMENTARY:

  • Andrew Gambrel, Brandon Baker, Caden Phipps, Jonathan Weaver for "Sons of Liberty: Massacre in Boston"

Senior PAPER:

  • Kayla Smith for "Starvation for Representation"
  • Alyssa Hillman for "Digging Out the Truth:  Muckrakers and Their Unveilings"

Top entries from each category and division at the state level will advance to the National History Day nationwide contest that takes place each June at the University of Maryland.

State National History Day Competition

Saturday, April 22, 2017, the state level of competition was held on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington.  Although there was a high level of competition, Bell County was well represented. 

The following achievements were awarded:

  • Junior DOCUMENTARY won the Sons of the American Revolution Award which was for $250 cash prize for the students.

 

 

  • Junior PERFORMANCE placed 1st and will move on to Nationals in Maryland during summer.

 

 

  • Junior EXHIBIT of Claudette Colvin placed 2nd and will move on to Nationals in Maryland as well.
